What first-timers get wrong in Bergen
The Bybanen light rail runs from the airport into the centre on a standard transit fare in about forty-five minutes, undercutting every taxi and shuttle. Tipping is not expected, and cash is close to useless since many places refuse it outright. Floibanen sells one-way tickets, and walking back down through Fjellveien takes half an hour for nothing. Anything above 4.7 percent alcohol is sold only in state Vinmonopolet shops.

Bergen with kids, realistically
Akvariet out on the Nordnes peninsula runs scheduled sea lion and penguin feedings and is a twenty-minute walk from the centre. VilVite at Marineholmen is a proper hands-on science centre aimed roughly at five to twelve. Floyen has a troll forest, grazing goats in summer and a large playground beside the top station. Buy children waterproof trousers on arrival, because Norwegian nurseries play outdoors through downpours and so will yours.
What to eat in Bergen
Skillingsbolle, a fist-sized cinnamon bun, is the Bergen bake, and Baker Brun on Bryggen claims to have invented it. Fish soup here is creamy rather than tomato-based, and the version inside the covered market hall is decent though priced for visitors. Raspeballer, grey potato dumplings with salted meat, appear on Thursday menus at old-school places like Bryggeloftet. Persetorsk, pressed salted cod, is the winter dish the guidebooks omit.
Bergen after dark
The night here runs on live music more than clubs. Hulen operates out of a 1950s bomb shelter beneath Nygardshoyden, Garage and Landmark carry the guitar bookings, and USF Verftet on the Nordnes waterfront handles jazz and film. Bars serve until around three, with last orders half an hour earlier. Buying wine or spirits to take away means the state Vinmonopolet, closed by six on weekdays, three on Saturdays and all Sunday.
