What first-timers get wrong in Busan
Busan's native transit card is Cashbee, though Seoul's T-money works on the metro and buses here too. Jagalchi's upstairs restaurants charge a separate cooking fee on top of whatever fish you buy downstairs, so settle the total before handing anything over. Gamcheon is a residential district, not an attraction park, and residents have put up signs about photographs taken through their windows.
What things cost in Busan
A bowl of dwaeji gukbap runs about 9,000 to 11,000 won and arrives with unlimited kimchi and salted shrimp. A metro ride is roughly 1,500 to 1,700 won depending on distance. Gamcheon costs nothing to enter and Haedong Yonggungsa is free. A 500ml draught in a Seomyeon bar is around 5,000 won. The Songdo cable car charges more for a glass-floored crystal cabin.
Busan with kids, realistically
Busan is built on hills, and Gamcheon's stepped alleys will beat a stroller, though a shuttle bus runs up from Toseong station. Haeundae's Sea Life aquarium and the Songdo Air Cruise gondola over open water suit ages four upward. Songjeong beach has gentle surf and board schools for teenagers. The Blueline Park beach train along the old Donghae rail bed is the easy win.
What to eat in Busan
Dwaeji gukbap, milky pork-bone soup poured over rice, belongs to Busan and nowhere else in Korea, and Seomyeon keeps a whole alley of nothing else. Milmyeon, wheat cold noodles, was improvised here by North Korean refugees when buckwheat ran short. BIFF Square sells ssiat hotteok, a pancake split open and stuffed with seeds. Buy hagfish grilled at Jagalchi, or fish cake from Samjin in Bupyeong Kkangtong Market.
Busan after dark
Seomyeon carries the volume, a grid of pojangmacha tents, soju bars and noraebang that runs past dawn on Fridays. Around Kyungsung and Pukyong universities the identical night costs half as much. Gwangalli's beachfront bars trade on the bridge lights and thin out by two. Haeundae is the expense-account version. The metro stops near midnight, which is when the taxi queues at Seomyeon station get long.
