What's actually worth your time in Athens

The Acropolis costs 30 euro in the April to October season and the old multi-site combination ticket was discontinued in 2025, so each ancient site is now bought separately. The Ancient Agora is the better value: the Temple of Hephaestus is the most complete Doric temple in Greece and draws a fraction of the crowd. The Panathenaic Stadium is all marble. Hadrian's Library takes fifteen minutes.

Athens's museums, and which one to pick

The Acropolis Museum places the Parthenon frieze on a top floor oriented to the actual building through glass, with the excavated neighbourhood visible under your feet. The National Archaeological Museum has the Mask of Agamemnon and the corroded gearing of the Antikythera mechanism. The Museum of Cycladic Art explains the marble figurines that influenced Modigliani and Brancusi. Benaki covers Greek life across three millennia.

Athens after dark

Dinner at ten, bars filling after midnight, and a genuine expectation that a night runs to four. Psyrri and Gazi are the concentrated bar districts; Koukaki and Petralona are residential and calmer. Rooftop bars charge for the floodlit Acropolis view. In summer the crowd migrates to the coast at Glyfada, and open-air cinemas like Cine Thission screen with the rock lit behind the screen.

What to eat in Athens

Souvlaki and gyros are the street standard, defended at Kostas off Plateia Agias Irinis. The Varvakios central market keeps meat halls open through the night, where patsas tripe soup is served to people finishing a shift or a night out. Psyrri and Exarcheia hold the mezedopoleia. Loukoumades come drenched in honey, and Greeks drink freddo espresso and freddo cappuccino all year, not just in summer.

Athens with kids, realistically

Go to the Acropolis at the eight o'clock opening: there is no shade on the rock and the marble is worn slick. The changing of the guard at Syntagma happens on the hour and the full ceremonial version on Sunday morning. The Hellenic Children's Museum and the Eugenides planetarium are indoor fallbacks. Metro stations are modern and lift-equipped; the Stavros Niarchos park runs free family programming.

When to go to Athens

The month to avoid is July — around 34°C (93°F) with roughly 1 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: October is the sweet spot, July the month most people skip.
