Varanasi after dark

There is no bar scene to speak of. Alcohol comes from licensed shops and a handful of hotel bars, and the evening's mass event is the aarti, after which people sit on the ghat steps late into the night. Sankat Mochan temple hosts classical music in its courtyard. The city's real performance hour is actually dawn, when Subah-e-Banaras puts musicians and yoga onto the Assi Ghat steps at sunrise.

What to eat in Varanasi

Breakfast is kachori with spiced potato and a jalebi, eaten standing in Kachori Gali off the Vishwanath lane. Winter brings malaiyo, a milk foam whipped overnight in dew and gone by February, alongside chooda matar. Kashi Chat Bhandar at Godowlia does the tamatar chaat; Blue Lassi near Manikarnika serves thick lassi in clay cups you smash afterwards. A Banarasi paan closes the meal and stains the street red.

What's actually worth your time in Varanasi

Take the boat at dawn rather than sunset: the ghats face east, so morning light lands on the buildings and the aarti crowds have gone home. The Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh runs roughly forty-five minutes from just after sundown, nearer six in winter and seven in summer. The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, opened in 2021, drove a marble avenue from the river to the temple. Ramnagar Fort across the water is magnificently decayed.

What things cost in Varanasi

Street breakfast is the cheapest on this whole list: kachori-sabzi with a jalebi for well under a hundred rupees, a clay cup of lassi fifty to a hundred. Shared dawn boats settle around 150 rupees a person. Sarnath's excavated ruins charge Indians 25 rupees against 300 for foreigners, while the museum beside them stays a token five and Bharat Kala Bhavan asks 20 against 250. Short e-rickshaw hops across the old city cost twenty or thirty.

Varanasi's museums, and which one to pick

Sarnath's Archaeological Museum keeps the original Ashokan lion capital, the sculpture reproduced on every Indian banknote, and it closes on Fridays, which wrecks a surprising number of itineraries. Bharat Kala Bhavan inside the Banaras Hindu University campus holds Mughal miniatures, Banarasi textiles and Nepali bronzes; it shuts on Sundays and stops admitting by half past four. Ramnagar Fort's museum is a dusty royal attic of palanquins, howdahs and an astronomical clock.

The month to avoid is June — around 37°C (99°F) with roughly 15 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: November is the sweet spot, June the month most people skip.
