What's actually worth your time in El Nido
El Nido is sold as four boat tours, A through D, and they are not equivalent. Tour A takes the Big and Small Lagoons, the postcard shot, worth the crowds only if you are on the first boat out. Tour C has the better beaches and snorkelling at Matinloc and Helicopter Island. Nacpan Beach, 45 minutes north by tricycle, is the finest sand and needs no boat at all. The town itself is a scruffy service strip.
What to eat in El Nido
The boat-tour lunch, with tuna or squid grilled on the sand and fruit carved by the crew, is honestly the best meal most visitors eat here. In town, Art Cafe on Calle Real is the long-standing traveller institution. Look for kinilaw, raw fish cured in vinegar and calamansi, and chicken inasal. Seafood is grilled to order at the stalls along the Corong-Corong waterfront around sunset.
What things cost in El Nido
A shared A-to-D boat tour costs 1,200 to 1,500 pesos including lunch and gear, before the 400-peso eco fee and the Big Lagoon's 200-peso entry and 150-peso kayak. A tricycle to Nacpan and back is roughly 500 to 700 pesos for the whole vehicle. A meal in town runs 250 to 450 pesos and a San Miguel 70 to 100. Dorm beds start near 700 pesos.
El Nido with kids, realistically
Bacuit Bay suits confident swimmers more than toddlers, since the Big Lagoon is kayak-only entry and boats board from the water off Corong-Corong at low tide. Nacpan and Las Cabanas have shallow, forgiving shorelines instead. Tricycles are the only transport and carry no restraints. The town has a small clinic, and anything serious means a flight to Puerto Princesa or Manila, which weighs on planning with small children.
When the weather turns in El Nido
The habagat season, roughly June to October, brings squalls that close Bacuit Bay outright when the coast guard suspends tours, and there is no appealing that decision. Build in a buffer day. Indoors means the cafes on Calle Real, a massage on Hama Street, or the covered market. Land options that still run: the Nagkalit-kalit waterfall hike and the Taraw Cliff via ferrata, both muddy but open.
