Comuna 13 is what people come for, and the six outdoor escalators installed in 2011 remain free to ride; go with a guide from the barrio rather than a downtown agency. Metrocable Line K to Santo Domingo gives you the same hillside on a normal 3,050-peso fare. Plaza Botero's twenty-three bronzes occupy a quarter of an hour. Parque Arvi swallows a whole morning.
What to eat in Medellín
Bandeja paisa is a platter rather than a dish: beans, rice, chicharron, chorizo, fried egg, arepa, avocado and ground beef, and one defeats most people. The corrientazo, a set lunch of soup, main and juice, is what the city actually eats on weekdays. Mercado del Rio gathers stalls under one roof in Ciudad del Rio. Bunuelos and pandebono come from bakeries, not restaurants.

Parque Explora pairs a science museum with the largest freshwater aquarium in South America and a vivarium of Amazon snakes, and it stands beside the Botanical Garden and Planetarium at Universidad station, so a single metro stop fills a day. The metro itself is clean, orderly and genuinely easy with a pushchair, which is unusual in Colombia. Hills defeat wheels everywhere else, Comuna 13 above all.
When the weather turns in Medellín
Rain comes hard in April, May, October and November, usually late afternoon, and the storms move through within an hour. Parque Explora, the Museo de Antioquia and the Casa de la Memoria are indoors and all sit on the metro. Santafe and El Tesoro in El Poblado are the mall answers. The Metro, elevated for most of its length, is a dry way to read the valley.
