Evenings amount to the Horner pub and whatever the campsite crowd brings, and both wind down before midnight because the trains and cable cars up to Wengen and Murren stop running and there is nowhere further to go. Summer bar talk is dominated by base jumpers and climbers. In winter the valley works as a dormitory for skiers who drink up in Wengen instead.

What to eat in Lauterbrunnen

Eating means hotel dining rooms and a handful of places along the single main street: Airtime Cafe for coffee and BASE-jumper gossip, the Hotel Oberland and the Horner for rosti, fondue and Bernese sausage. Nothing serves late. The Coop by the station is where hikers assemble picnics, and the mountain huts above Wengen and Murren sell better views than the valley floor manages.

What's actually worth your time in Lauterbrunnen

Staubbach Falls drops nearly 300 metres in one unbroken plume behind the village church, and the free tunnel path cut behind the water opens only from roughly June to October. Trummelbachfalle is the one worth paying for: CHF 18 buys a lift built inside the cliff to ten glacier-fed falls thundering through the rock. The valley's advertised seventy-two waterfalls are mostly roadside trickles by August.

The valley floor is flat and pram-friendly the whole way from the station to Trummelbach, about 45 minutes on paved path beside the Weisse Lutschine. Trummelbach's wet metal stairs suit confident walkers from around six rather than toddlers. Children like swapping cable cars at Birg on the Schilthorn run, and the aerial cableway up to Grutschalp takes pushchairs without any fuss.

When the weather turns in Lauterbrunnen

Rain actually improves the waterfalls, so pull on shells and do Trummelbach, where you are inside the mountain regardless. Otherwise the trains keep running: twenty minutes to Interlaken for covered shopping and the Kursaal, or up to Murren, whose sports centre keeps a heated pool running. Cloud sits in this valley for days at a time, so paying CHF 91 for Schilthorn is money burnt.

The month to avoid is January — around 6°C (43°F) with roughly 14 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: August is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
