What first-timers get wrong in Bangkok
The standard scam opens with a friendly stranger explaining that the Grand Palace is shut for a ceremony, then a cheap tuk-tuk tour that terminates in a gem shop. Insist drivers use the meter or open Grab instead. Never step on a dropped banknote, which carries the king's image. Cover shoulders and knees for temples. The 50 baht surcharge from the official airport taxi rank is legitimate.
What's actually worth your time in Bangkok
The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew share one 500 baht ticket and one strictly enforced dress code, with sarongs rented at the gate. Wat Pho next door is cheaper, calmer, and holds the 46-metre reclining Buddha plus the country's traditional massage school. Wat Arun repays crossing the river, and the ferry costs a few baht. Ignore anyone outside a temple announcing that it is closed today.
What things cost in Bangkok
A plate of rice and pork from a street cart costs 50 to 80 baht, and the same dish in an air-conditioned restaurant runs three times that. BTS singles climb with distance from roughly 17 to 62 baht. The Grand Palace at 500 baht is the priciest ticket most visitors buy. A foot massage is about 300 baht an hour and a large Chang beer 80 to 150.
Bangkok with kids, realistically
Heat is the constraint rather than a shortage of attractions, so schedule outdoors before ten and after four. Lumpini Park has free-roaming water monitor lizards up to two metres long, which children rate above any zoo. Sea Life beneath Siam Paragon and KidZania upstairs are both cold and indoors. Older BTS stations have stairs only, so a folding pushchair beats a large one, and taxis here rarely carry car seats.
When the weather turns in Bangkok
Between June and October a downpour can flood a soi within twenty minutes and stop taxis entirely. The mall belt along Rama I and Sukhumvit is the plan: Siam Paragon, Siam Center, MBK and Terminal 21 connect by covered skywalk to the BTS, so you cross central Bangkok dry. ICONSIAM on the Thonburi bank runs a free shuttle boat. An hour of Thai massage costs less than a cinema seat.
