Rain here amounts to a handful of days between November and March, but when it arrives the unpaved stretches of the medina turn to red slurry and the covered souk lanes drip through their slatted roofs. Tanjia is the local dish and it is not a tagine: beef with preserved lemon and smen sealed into a clay urn and buried in the embers of a hammam furnace. Mechoui Alley, a doorway off Jemaa el-Fna, sells pit-roasted lamb by weight with cumin and salt. The square's snail broth stalls charge pocket change. Rooftops on Rue Riad Zitoun are selling you the view.

What first-timers get wrong in Marrakech

The oldest trick is being told your route is closed or the square is that way, then billed for the escort; walk on and use a downloaded map, since riads sit down unnamed derbs. Petit taxis carry meters that drivers ignore, so fix the price first, and Gueliz to the medina should be twenty or thirty dirhams. Any photograph with a snake or monkey becomes an invoice.

What's actually worth your time in Marrakech

Ben Youssef Madrasa, reopened in 2022 after a long restoration, is the best single ticket in the medina: carved cedar and zellij around a still courtyard. Bahia Palace repays a slow hour. The Saadian Tombs funnel a large queue past one small chamber and are the most oversold stop in the city. Koutoubia is exterior-only for non-Muslims, and Menara Gardens is a photograph, not an outing.

Marrakech's museums, and which one to pick

Studio KO's brick-latticed building on Rue Yves Saint Laurent shows rotating couture from the designer's archive, and next door the Berber Museum occupies his former painting studio inside Jardin Majorelle. Maison de la Photographie holds glass-plate and early colour images of Morocco, and hides a rooftop terrace above the medina roofline. Dar El Bacha's Musee des Confluences includes the Bacha Coffee room downstairs.
