Planning a babymoon in Nara
Bowing deer, Tōdai-ji's Great Buddha, and a park that turns golden every autumn — an easy day trip from Kyoto. For two, decide between a hotel with service and a private rental with space — Expedia lists both in Nara, so you can weigh price, location and reviews in one search.
When the weather turns in Nara
Nara's sights are overwhelmingly outdoors, so rain is a real problem here in a way it is not in Kyoto. The Nara National Museum and Kōfuku-ji's treasure hall are the two dry hours worth having. Naramachi's approach has covered arcades — Higashimuki and Mochiidono run under roof near Kintetsu station. The Daibutsuden is enormous and indoors, once you have crossed a soaking park to reach it.
What to eat in Nara
Nara eats differently from Kyoto. Kakinoha-zushi wraps cured mackerel or salmon in a persimmon leaf, a preservation trick from when the sea lay a mountain range away. Miwa somen, the fine wheat noodle, is said to have started nearby. Narazuke are vegetables pickled in sake lees and smell unmistakably of it. Nakatanidou off Sanjo-dori pounds mochi at violent speed for a crowd, several times an hour.
What first-timers get wrong in Nara
Two stations serve Nara and they are not interchangeable: Kintetsu Nara sits a five-minute walk from the park while JR Nara is a dull twenty minutes further west, and the Kintetsu line from Osaka Namba is both faster and cheaper. A Japan Rail Pass therefore helps you less here than almost anywhere. Bow to a deer and it bows back, then demands food. Keep maps and paper tickets hidden, because deer eat them.
What's actually worth your time in Nara
Tōdai-ji's Daibutsuden shelters a fifteen-metre bronze Buddha cast in 752 and is the one thing to see; the hall ranks among the largest wooden buildings on earth even after being rebuilt narrower. Kasuga Taisha's approach carries roughly three thousand stone and bronze lanterns, lit only twice a year. Nara Park's deer are wild, legally protected, and will headbutt you for crackers. Hōryū-ji, an hour out, holds the oldest surviving wooden buildings anywhere.
Nara's museums, and which one to pick
The Nara National Museum's Buddhist Sculpture Hall, inside an 1894 Meiji brick building, holds one of the deepest collections of Japanese Buddhist statuary in existence and closes Mondays. Each autumn it hosts the Shōsō-in exhibition, a few weeks when treasures from Tōdai-ji's eighth-century imperial repository — Silk Road glass, lutes, masks — go on show and the queues become enormous. Kōfuku-ji's treasure museum keeps the three-faced, six-armed Ashura.
