When the weather turns in Sintra

Sintra manufactures its own weather, the Serra dragging Atlantic cloud inland so that Pena frequently sits above or inside it and a paid view turns out white. The National Palace is fully indoors and its kitchens, chimneys and tiled halls fill an hour. Queluz, twenty minutes back down the line, is another roofed palace entirely. Regaleira's mossy stairs and tunnels get genuinely slippery, so save that one for dry weather.

What to eat in Sintra

Travesseiros, long puff-pastry pillows filled with egg-and-almond cream, come from Casa Piriquita on Rua das Padarias, trading since 1862, with a second branch fifty metres uphill for when the first has a queue into the street. Queijadas, small cheese-and-cinnamon tarts, predate them by centuries. The serious drink is Colares wine, grown in coastal sand on ungrafted vines phylloxera never reached, and Adega Viuva Gomes still bottles it.

What first-timers get wrong in Sintra

Pena sells timed half-hour entry slots that vanish days ahead in season, and arriving without one in August means the park ticket or nothing at all. Bus 434 runs a one-way loop, so you cannot ride it back the way you came. Trains from Rossio need a rechargeable Viva Viagem card, fifty cents bought once, because paper tickets are no longer issued. The Cabo da Roca bus is now numbered 1253 and takes cash.

What's actually worth your time in Sintra

Pena's exterior is the whole show and its state rooms are a slow shuffle, so the park-only ticket is a defensible choice when time is short. Quinta da Regaleira earns its entry for the Initiation Well alone, a twenty-seven-metre inverted spiral staircase opening into tunnels beneath the garden. Monserrate has the finest planting and a fraction of the crowds. Convento dos Capuchos, its cells lined entirely in cork, is the strangest thing in these hills.

Sintra's museums, and which one to pick

Palaces overshadow museums here, and rightly so. MU.SA occupies the old casino building on Avenida Heliodoro Salgado and shows contemporary Portuguese work. The Museu Anjos Teixeira, set in a former watermill below the town, holds the sculptor's studio casts. But the National Palace of Sintra is the real museum: the painted magpies across the ceiling of the Sala das Pegas, the heraldic Sala dos Brasoes, and Portugal's oldest surviving azulejo interiors.

When to go to Sintra

The month to avoid is December — around 15°C (59°F) with roughly 13 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: July is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
