Lake Como after dark

Plan for dinner rather than a night out. Villages empty when the last ferries stop, which in winter can mean mid-afternoon and in summer around nine or ten, and Bellagio effectively closes alongside them. Como city is the exception, with a student population, bars clustered around Piazza San Fedele, and lakefront places that run past midnight through the season.

What to eat in Lake Como

This is freshwater cooking and nothing like the coast. Missoltini are shad sun-dried, pressed into tins, then grilled and dressed with vinegar over polenta. Risotto con pesce persico uses lake perch fried in butter and sage. Polenta uncia arrives heavy with butter and cheese. Look one street inland at Varenna or Lezzeno, because the Bellagio waterfront often will not serve any of it.

A one-way passenger ferry between central-lake towns such as Bellagio and Varenna is €5.50. The Brunate funicular costs €3.60 single or €7.20 return. Villa Carlotta is €17.50 and Balbianello €13 for gardens alone. Eating one street back from the water instead of on it is the single largest saving available anywhere in Bellagio or Menaggio.

Lake Como with kids, realistically

Ferries do the heavy lifting, since children treat a €5.50 Bellagio to Varenna hop as the outing itself. Otherwise these villages are stairs and unrailed lake walls, so toddlers need holding throughout. Villa Carlotta's park gives room to run, whereas Balbianello does not and bans picnics outright. The Brunate funicular and the lidos up at Domaso suit school-age children best.

When the weather turns in Lake Como

Gardens are the whole point here, so rain costs more than it would in a city. Villa Carlotta's museum rooms and the Tempio Voltiano stay open, and Como's silk museum explains the industry that paid for these houses in the first place. Otherwise make it a ferry day with a covered deck, or take the half-hour train over the border to Lugano.

The month to avoid is December — around 10°C (50°F) with roughly 9 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: August is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
