St. Moritz after dark

Nightlife is a winter proposition and priced accordingly. The King's Club beneath Badrutt's Palace claims to be Switzerland's first discotheque, opened in 1963, and still runs a door policy; the Dracula Club above the lake admits members and their guests. Roo Bar at the Hotel Hauser is where people drink after skiing without changing clothes. Come May, and again in November, most of the village simply shuts its doors.

Fifteen francs opens the Segantini Museum. A return up to Piz Nair by way of Corviglia is roughly CHF 74, and a day on the Engadin lift pass around CHF 90. Guest runs on the Olympia Bob Run cost several hundred francs for about seventy-five seconds of ice. Nusstorte and coffee at Hanselmann totals near CHF 15, which is the cheap end of anything in this village.

What's actually worth your time in St. Moritz

Winter puts the attraction on the lake itself: White Turf horse racing across the ice on February Sundays, snow polo in January, and a marked walking track over the frozen surface the rest of the season. The Olympia Bob Run, rebuilt from natural ice every year since 1904, sells guest descents down the track the Games used. In the village, the leaning tower is all that survives of a church pulled down in 1893.

Engadiner Nusstorte, a short pastry case packed with caramelised walnuts, is what travellers carry home, and Hanselmann on Via Maistra has been selling it since 1894. Capuns, spaetzle dough rolled inside chard leaves and simmered in milk, deserves ordering in a mountain hut rather than a hotel dining room. Buendnerfleisch is air-dried beef sliced nearly transparent. Roeteli, a cherry liqueur, gets poured once the plates are cleared.

St. Moritz with kids, realistically

Lej da Staz, a shallow forest lake twenty minutes on foot from St. Moritz Bad, is the one Engadine water warm enough for children, with meadow and a restaurant on the bank. Winter sends families up the Albula line to Preda and back down by toboggan. The marmot trail at Muottas Muragl gives small walkers something to hunt for. Guest cards cover the valley buses, which matters when everything strings along one floor.

The month to avoid is January — around -2°C (28°F) with roughly 11 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: August is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
