Wengen after dark

For fifty-one weeks a year this is a village of roughly 1,300 people whose bars, the Tanne and Sina's and the Crystal, hold perhaps eighty drinkers between them and empty by eleven. Lauberhorn weekend in January inverts that completely, when tens of thousands arrive by train for the World Cup downhill and the place drinks like somewhere else. Any night, the last cogwheel train down to Lauterbrunnen sets the real closing time.

What things cost in Wengen

The cable car up to Maennlichen from the village is CHF 62 return or CHF 31 one way, with the rooftop Royal Ride adding about five. A hiking ticket through to Kleine Scheidegg starts near CHF 31. Leaving a car in the Lauterbrunnen garage runs roughly CHF 20 a day while you are up here. Dinner is about CHF 25 somewhere modest and upward of CHF 50 for a main in the hotel restaurants.

What's actually worth your time in Wengen

Everything here follows from the shelf the village sits on, a terrace four hundred metres above the Lauterbrunnen valley floor with the Jungfrau closing the far end. The cable car to Maennlichen carries an open rooftop deck you can ride for a few francs more, and the Panoramaweg from the top to Kleine Scheidegg stays nearly level with the Eiger in view throughout. What to eat in Wengen

Everything eaten up here arrived by cogwheel train, and the prices say so. Two small grocers serve the village with no real supermarket, so self-caterers stock up in Lauterbrunnen or Interlaken before riding up. Mountain-hut cooking is what to seek: Oepfelchueechli, apple rings in batter under cinnamon sugar, and a Kaeseschnitte at the huts along the trails toward Kleine Scheidegg. Hotel dining rooms serve half-board in fixed sittings, so walk-ins should ring ahead.

Wengen with kids, realistically

No cars means children can be let loose on Dorfstrasse, rare enough in the Alps to be why many families pick Wengen over Grindelwald. Up on Maennlichen, the Lieselotte themed trail passes an eight-and-a-half-metre wooden cow and stays short enough for four-year-olds. Village lanes pitch steeply in places, and every arrival and departure means lifting bags on and off a train, so travel considerably lighter than usual.

When to go to Wengen

The month to avoid is January — around 3°C (37°F) with roughly 14 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: August is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
