What's actually worth your time in Chefchaouen

The blue is the sight, and it is maintained rather than weathered, since households repaint their own stretch of wall each year. Ras el-Maa, the spring at the medina's upper edge, still has women washing laundry in the channel. The Spanish Mosque, a half-hour climb east, was built in the 1920s and never used, and gives the postcard view at sunset. Akchour's waterfalls are the day trip.

What first-timers get wrong in Chefchaouen

No railway reaches Chefchaouen. You arrive on a CTM coach or a shared grand taxi from Tangier in about three hours, and CTM seats sell out in summer, so book them. Skip the guide, because the medina is too small to get lost in. Bring cash, since card terminals are rare and the ATMs sit outside the walls on Avenue Hassan II. Residents in photogenic doorways may ask for payment.

Chefchaouen's museums, and which one to pick

There is one museum and it is enough: the Kasbah, a red-walled fortress squatting in the middle of Plaza Uta el-Hammam, holding a modest ethnographic collection, the old prison cells and a walled Andalusian garden. Its tower is the only elevated viewpoint inside the town itself. Beyond that Chefchaouen has no galleries whatever, and the wool-weaving cooperatives on the lanes off the square are the substitute.

When the weather turns in Chefchaouen

The Rif catches more rain than most of Morocco, and between November and March the mountain sits inside cloud for days at a time. Blue-washed steps become genuinely slippery when wet, so this is not the morning to chase the Spanish Mosque viewpoint. Retreat into the Kasbah's rooms, book a hammam, or spend an hour in the weaving cooperatives watching blankets come off the looms.

What things cost in Chefchaouen

This is the cheapest stop on most Morocco itineraries. A double in a medina guesthouse commonly runs 250 to 450 dirhams and a tagine on a side lane 50 to 80. The Kasbah museum ticket is well under 100. A CTM coach seat from Tangier also comes in under 100. Chartering a grand taxi to Akchour and back costs a few hundred for the whole car, split between you.
