What's actually worth your time in Chiang Mai

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep sits fifteen kilometres up the mountain behind a naga staircase of 306 steps, with a funicular for anyone unwilling to climb. Inside the old city moat, Wat Chedi Luang's stupa, truncated by the 1545 earthquake, is the one to see, and Wat Phra Singh the busiest. The Sunday Walking Street closes Ratchadamnoen from four in the afternoon and is the best market of the week.

What first-timers get wrong in Chiang Mai

Red songthaew trucks are the local bus: flag one, name your destination, and pay 30 to 50 baht per person on arrival rather than chartering the vehicle. Settle the price first if the driver hesitates. The moat road runs one-way in opposite directions on each side, which confuses drivers constantly. Temples require covered shoulders and knees, and Doi Suthep enforces it. There is no rail transit at all.

Chiang Mai's museums, and which one to pick

MAIIAM in San Kamphaeng, twenty minutes east, is the serious one: a converted warehouse behind a mirrored mosaic facade showing Thai contemporary art, closed on Tuesdays. In the old city, the Lanna Folklife Museum opposite the Three Kings Monument explains Lanna kingdom ritual, textile and teak building through room-sized dioramas. One combined ticket covers it along with the City Arts Centre and the Historical Centre next door.

When the weather turns in Chiang Mai

The larger air problem here is not rain but smoke: agricultural burning from roughly February to April pushes readings among the worst on earth, and that is the season to check numbers before booking. For actual rain, Maya at the Nimman end and Central Festival are the malls, cooking schools run indoors all day, and massage taught through the women's prison vocational centre costs very little.

What things cost in Chiang Mai

Khao soi from a shophouse is 50 to 70 baht and rarely more anywhere in the city. A songthaew hop across town is 30 to 50 baht a person. Doi Suthep charges foreigners a small entry fee at the top, in the region of 30 baht. A full-day cooking course with market tour runs roughly 1,000 to 1,500.
