What's actually worth your time in Fukuoka

Fukuoka's set pieces are modest: Maizuru Park holds only the stone walls of Kuroda's castle, which is a ten-minute walk rather than a ticket. Tochoji's seated wooden Buddha, ten metres of it, justifies the detour into Gion, and Kushida Shrine keeps a Yamakasa float standing year-round for free. Fukuoka Tower charges for a view of a low-rise city. Dazaifu Tenmangu, thirty minutes out on the Nishitetsu line, is the day trip that pays.

What first-timers get wrong in Fukuoka

Fukuoka Airport is two subway stops from Hakata station, about five minutes, so allow far less transfer time than any other Japanese city demands. The subway day pass is 640 yen and pays off after roughly three rides. Hakata and Tenjin are different stations on different systems, and the private Nishitetsu line to Dazaifu leaves from Nishitetsu Fukuoka, not JR Hakata. Yatai are cash only.

Fukuoka's museums, and which one to pick

The city museum in Momochi keeps the gold seal a farmer turned up on Shikanoshima in 1784, stamped with the name of a kingdom that sent envoys to Han China; entry is 200 yen and it shuts Mondays. The Asian Art Museum in Hakata Riverain collects modern work from twenty-three Asian countries and closes Wednesdays instead. Kyushu National Museum sits behind Dazaifu Tenmangu, up a tunnel and escalator.

When the weather turns in Fukuoka

Rain is the yatai's enemy, so move the evening indoors. Canal City Hakata stacks shops, a basement ramen floor billed as Ramen Stadium and a fountain show under one roof, five minutes on foot from Hakata station. Tochoji, the Asian Art Museum in Hakata Riverain and the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum sit within a few covered blocks of each other. Kyushu National Museum is reached by tunnel from Dazaifu's approach.

What things cost in Fukuoka

A bowl of Hakata ramen runs roughly 700 to 1,000 yen, and the kaedama noodle refill adds about 100 to 150. A yatai plate lands around 500 to 900 yen and stalls post price lists by city rule.
