What's actually worth your time in Zermatt

The Matterhorn does the work and its free version is the best one: the Kirchbrucke over the Matter Vispa at dawn, before the peak clouds over mid-morning. The Gornergrat rack railway climbs 33 minutes to 3,089 metres and you want the right-hand side going up. Matterhorn Glacier Paradise reaches 3,883 metres with its Glacier Palace ice cave; Sunnegga is the fast, cheap alternative.

What first-timers get wrong in Zermatt

Zermatt is car-free, so the car stops at the Matterhorn Terminal in Tasch, roughly 2,100 covered spaces at about CHF 16 a day, and you take the shuttle train up. Electric taxis meet trains, but most hotels send their own cart free if you give an arrival time. Mountain tickets cost more than the room, so budget them first.

Zermatt's museums, and which one to pick

The Matterhorn Museum, branded Zermatlantis, is dug in under the village square and reconstructs an old Zermatt street underground; its centrepiece is the broken rope from Whymper's 1865 first ascent, on which four men fell during the descent. The mountaineers' cemetery beside St Mauritius church lists the dead by route. The Hinterdorf lane of timber granaries on mouse-guard stone discs is free.

When the weather turns in Zermatt

Cloud usually swallows the Matterhorn completely, which is the moment to go underground instead: Zermatlantis beneath the square, then the Glacier Palace ice cave carved into the Theodul, which is indifferent to weather. The Gorner Gorge boardwalk works in drizzle. The Gornergrat train still runs and its summit hotel often serves lunch above the cloud layer.

What things cost in Zermatt

The Tasch shuttle is CHF 8.60 each way and CHF 17.20 return. Gornergrat returns start around CHF 96, Matterhorn Glacier Paradise runs roughly CHF 100 to 120, and the Peak2Peak ticket bundles both in one day. A raclette portion is CHF 9 to 12 and multiplies fast, a hut lunch with a drink nears CHF 40, and a half-litre of beer is about CHF 8.

When to go to Zermatt

The month to avoid is January — around 0°C (32°F) with roughly 12 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: July is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
