What's actually worth your time in Amman

Amman's own sights fit into a morning: the Citadel on Jabal al-Qal'a, with the Temple of Hercules columns, a colossal marble hand and the Umayyad Palace's rebuilt dome, then the second-century Roman Theatre cut into the hillside below it. What the city is really good for is the day trips, with Jerash's colonnaded street an hour north, the Dead Sea an hour west, and Madaba's sixth-century mosaic map south.

What to eat in Amman

Two addresses define eating here. Hashem, an alley kitchen off King Faisal Street in the Balad, serves only falafel, ful, fatteh and mint tea, around the clock, for almost nothing. Habibah's counter at the bottom of the stairwell off King Hussein Street sells cheese kunafa by weight, cut from an orange-tinted tray. The shawarma cart at Reem on Second Circle draws its own queue every night.

Amman's museums, and which one to pick

The Jordan Museum in Ras al-Ain owns two things nowhere else has: the Ain Ghazal plaster figures, made around 7500 BC and among the oldest large human statues anywhere, and the Copper Scroll, the single Dead Sea Scroll inscribed on metal and read as a list of buried treasure. The National Gallery of Fine Arts in Weibdeh spreads across two buildings either side of a park, collecting modern art from across the Islamic world.

Amman after dark

The weekend runs Friday and Saturday, so Thursday night is the big one and Sunday is a working day. Weibdeh's bars, clustered near Paris Circle and the Rainbow Street end, draw the mixed arts-adjacent crowd, while Abdoun leans expensive. Alcohol is legal but heavily taxed, so a beer costs what a whole meal does. Most evenings, though, mean argileh and cards on a cafe terrace.

Amman with kids, realistically

The city is stacked across seven-plus hills joined by long public staircases, which makes a pram close to useless downtown. The Children's Museum Jordan in King Hussein Park is properly hands-on and worth an afternoon, and the Royal Automobile Museum beside it holds King Hussein's own cars. Warn children before the Dead Sea, since the salt makes any small cut or eye splash extremely memorable.

When to go to Amman

The month to avoid is January — around 12°C (54°F) with roughly 10 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: May is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
