What's actually worth your time in Muscat

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque admits non-Muslims Saturday to Thursday between eight and eleven only, and the prayer hall is floored by a single Persian carpet of some 4,300 square metres. Mutrah Souq behind the corniche is the working old market, best at dusk when the frankincense smoke thickens. The Royal Opera House gives daytime tours for a few rial. Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts are viewed, not entered.

What to eat in Muscat

Omani cooking is slow: shuwa, goat or lamb marinated and buried in an earth oven for up to two days, belongs to Eid rather than to menus. Everyday eating is majboos rice, grilled kingfish and Indian-influenced curries, and the Mutrah fish market covers the raw end of that. Halwa, gelatinous with rosewater and saffron, comes with kahwa and is genuinely local rather than imported.

Muscat's museums, and which one to pick

The National Museum opposite Al Alam Palace opened in 2016 and is the serious one, fourteen galleries with Arabic braille throughout, and it opens later on Fridays. Bait Al Zubair in Old Muscat is a family house turned museum of khanjar daggers, silver jewellery and dress, charging about a rial. The Oman Across Ages Museum at Manah lies an hour and a half inland and needs its own trip.

Muscat after dark

Alcohol is legal but confined to hotel bars and licensed restaurants, so there is no bar district and no street drinking. Evenings belong to the Mutrah corniche after sunset, when families walk it and the dhows light up, and to shisha cafes in Qurum and Al Mouj. The Royal Opera House programmes full seasons of opera and Arabic music. Friday is the quiet day, not Sunday.

Muscat with kids, realistically

Qurum Beach runs for kilometres of shallow sand with a park behind it, and the sea stays warm all year. Turtle watching at Ras Al Jinz, three hours down the coast, puts children on a night beach with a guide, and green turtles nest there year round. Wadi Shab requires a swim and a scramble, so it starts around age eight.
