What's actually worth your time in Seattle

Pike Place is a working market rather than a museum, so go before nine to see fishmongers instead of tourists, and give the Gum Wall in Post Alley about thirty seconds. Space Needle admission runs $35 to $42.50 and is cheapest Monday to Thursday before eleven. Kerry Park on Queen Anne delivers the same skyline for nothing. A walk-on Bainbridge ferry buys an hour on the Sound for a few dollars.

What to eat in Seattle

Cold-water oysters are the case worth making here, and Taylor Shellfish and The Walrus and the Carpenter in Ballard shuck them by the dozen. Seattle-style teriyaki, invented in this city in the seventies, is a cheap counter meal in every neighbourhood. Dick's Drive-In sells burgers for a couple of dollars until 2am. In the International District, Vietnamese pho and Cantonese barbecue outnumber anything at Pike Place.

Seattle's museums, and which one to pick

Seattle Art Museum downtown, whose Olympic Sculpture Park is always free, waives admission on first Thursdays, as several city museums do. MoPOP at Seattle Center holds Hendrix and Nirvana material inside Gehry's crumpled shell. The Museum of Flight at Boeing Field, $29 for adults, has a Concorde, the prototype 747 and a retired Air Force One you walk through. The Frye Art Museum has been free since 1952.

Seattle after dark

Capitol Hill along Pike and Pine is the dense night district, with queer bars, dives and clubs inside four blocks, and Washington law halts alcohol service at 2am so the street empties abruptly. Ballard's brewery row runs earlier and beerier, most taprooms shutting by ten or eleven. Pioneer Square keeps the live music rooms. Weeknights die fast, because Seattle gets up early.

Seattle with kids, realistically

Seattle Center concentrates everything: the Pacific Science Center's tropical butterfly house, MoPOP, the Artists at Play playground and the fountain children run through all summer. The Monorail from Westlake takes two minutes and costs $4 for adults and $2 for ages six to eighteen, and it is itself the attraction for small children. The Aquarium's Ocean Pavilion opened in 2024 with a warm-water Coral Triangle tank.

When to go to Seattle

The month to avoid is January — around 8°C (46°F) with roughly 20 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: July is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
