What's actually worth your time in Ushuaia

Tierra del Fuego National Park, twelve kilometres west, is the one that matters, with the Senda Costera along Lapataia Bay and the sign where Ruta 3 finally stops. The standard outing is a three-hour Beagle Channel catamaran past the sea lion haul-outs to the Les Éclaireurs lighthouse. The Tren del Fin del Mundo is a short narrow-gauge ride on the prisoners' old woodcutting line, charming and entirely optional.

What to eat in Ushuaia

Centolla, the southern king crab, is the dish, hauled from the Beagle Channel and best in the plain rooms: El Viejo Marino, Tía Elvira, or cheaper still out at Puerto Almanza, the fishing hamlet seventy-five kilometres east. Merluza negra, the Patagonian toothfish, is the other local catch. Cordero fueguino comes spit-roasted over embers. Beagle and Cape Horn are brewed in town.

Ushuaia's museums, and which one to pick

The Museo Marítimo y del Presidio occupies the prison itself, five radiating wings of cells with one left deliberately unrestored, alongside Antarctic expedition models and Cape Horn shipwreck material; the ticket is valid two consecutive days and you will use both. The Museo del Fin del Mundo on Maipú covers Yámana and Selk'nam material and the local wrecks. The Galería Temática tells the Fuegian story through dioramas.

Ushuaia after dark

A working port makes for a bar-shaped night rather than a club-shaped one: pubs along San Martín, the brewery taprooms and a couple of late spots, all busiest in December and January when the Antarctic ships turn around. Midsummer light hanging past eleven wrecks everyone's sense of the hour. Come winter, dark falls by four and the town belongs to the Cerro Castor ski crowd.

Ushuaia with kids, realistically

Daylight is the variable that reorganises everything: December gives roughly seventeen hours and June barely seven. The catamaran suits most ages when the channel is calm and is wretched when it is not. The prison museum's cells hold older children; the park's Laguna Negra boardwalk takes a pushchair where the Cerro Guanaco climb emphatically will not. Pack windproof layers even in January.

When to go to Ushuaia

The month to avoid is July — around 2°C (36°F) with roughly 16 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: February is the sweet spot, July the month most people skip.
