What's actually worth your time in Vancouver

Stanley Park's ten-kilometre seawall and the Brockton Point poles cost nothing and outrank most paid attractions in the city. The honest call on suspension bridges: Capilano charges heavily, while Lynn Canyon in North Vancouver is free, quieter and swings just as much. Granville Island's public market deserves a morning. Gastown's steam clock is two minutes of whistling and a crowd, so see it and move on.

What to eat in Vancouver

Vancouver eats Japanese better and cheaper than most of North America, from neighbourhood izakaya to the Japadog carts downtown. The dim sum, though, is in Richmond, where Cantonese kitchens outclass anything in Chinatown. Spot prawns land in a short May-to-June season the whole city tracks. Granville Island's market handles the picnic version. Nanaimo bars, three layers and no baking, are the local sweet.

Vancouver's museums, and which one to pick

The Museum of Anthropology at UBC charges $26 for Bill Reid's Raven and the First Men and a hall of Northwest Coast house posts lit through glass walls; it stays open until nine on Thursdays and closes Mondays between mid-October and mid-May. The Vancouver Art Gallery holds the Emily Carr collection. Science World occupies the geodesic dome left standing after Expo 86.

Vancouver after dark

It ends early, which catches visitors out. Brewery taprooms on Main Street and in East Vancouver often stop pouring around eleven. The Granville strip runs to three and is the loudest and roughest option, while Gastown's cocktail rooms are the civilised one. The last SkyTrain leaves around one and the Canada Line stops sooner, so plan the trip home before the final round.

Vancouver with kids, realistically

Children twelve and under travel free on every TransLink service, which turns the SeaBus into an eleven-minute harbour cruise for the price of one adult fare. Science World is built entirely for hands. Stanley Park adds a miniature railway, an aquarium and the Second Beach water park. SkyTrain stations have lifts throughout, so strollers move easily, which is rare among North American systems.

When to go to Vancouver

The month to avoid is January — around 6°C (43°F) with roughly 21 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: July is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
