Kyoto after dark

This is not a late city. Pontocho, a lane barely one person wide between the Kamo river and Kiyamachi, is where dinner happens, and many kitchens stop taking orders by nine. Gion after dark is dim and residential; photographing geiko on the private lanes off Hanamikoji now carries posted fines. Kiyamachi holds the student bars. Most of Kyoto is asleep before Osaka has properly started.

What to eat in Kyoto

Kyoto cooking is vegetable-led because the city sits inland: yudofu simmered tofu near Nanzen-ji, obanzai home-style side dishes, and pickles sold by the barrel at Nishiki Market, whose five covered blocks now lean touristy but still supply local kitchens. Kaiseki is both the local invention and the local expense. For serious matcha, the shops that matter are in Uji, twenty minutes south on the JR Nara Line.

What things cost in Kyoto

Most temples charge between 400 and 600 yen, so a five-temple day stays under 3,000. The subway-only day card is 800 yen and the combined subway-and-bus card 1,100. A lunchtime obanzai set runs 1,200 to 2,000 yen, while dinner kaiseki starts near 8,000 and climbs without ceiling. Machiya guesthouses in Nishijin cost less than Kawaramachi hotels and put you on a quieter street.

What's actually worth your time in Kyoto

Fushimi Inari costs nothing and never closes, which is the argument for climbing it at dawn before the torii tunnels fill. Sanjusangendo repays its ticket better than anything else here: one thousand and one gilded Kannon statues lined up in a hall about 120 metres long. The Arashiyama bamboo grove is a five-minute photo stop that guidebooks badly oversell. At Kinkaku-ji you view the pavilion from a fixed path across the pond and leave.

Kyoto's museums, and which one to pick

Kyoto National Museum in Higashiyama shows Heian and Kamakura Buddhist sculpture and rotates its holdings rather than fixing a permanent hang; Mondays it is shut. The Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art in Okazaki reopened in 2020 behind its original 1933 facade. The International Manga Museum, housed in a converted primary school, lets you pull any of some 50,000 volumes off the corridor shelves and read it on the lawn.

When to go to Kyoto

The month to avoid is January — around 9°C (48°F) with roughly 9 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: November is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
