Zanzibar after dark

This is a Muslim island and Stone Town falls quiet after dinner; drinking happens on hotel rooftops such as Emerson on Hurumzi and the Africa House terrace, which fills for sunset. The party lives forty minutes north at Kendwa, where Kendwa Rocks runs its full moon night. Through Ramadan daytime restaurants close and eating in the street is avoided. Beyond the north beaches there is no club scene.

What to eat in Zanzibar

The island cooks with cloves and cardamom it grew for the sultanate: urojo soup thickened and topped with fried cassava, octopus curry, pilau. Forodhani Gardens sets grills along the seafront at dusk, where the seafood skewers are fine and the folded stuffed chapati sold as Zanzibar pizza is the actual local invention. Darajani market sells the same spices far below shop prices.

What things cost in Zanzibar

Tanzanian shillings work in markets and dala dalas while hotels and tour operators quote US dollars, so carry both. A Forodhani plate of grilled seafood runs a few thousand shillings and a Zanzibar pizza less. Dala dala rides across the island cost around 2,000 shillings. Entry to the slave market site and cathedral is charged in dollars, as are spice tours and the Prison Island boat.

What's actually worth your time in Zanzibar

Stone Town's real draw is the maze itself, its carved Indian and Omani doors and its dead ends. The House of Wonders, the seafront palace that had electricity and a lift before anywhere else in East Africa, partly collapsed on Christmas Day 2020 and stays closed behind hoarding. The former slave market beneath the Anglican cathedral is the one nobody should skip. Prison Island's giant tortoises are a short boat ride out.

Zanzibar's museums, and which one to pick

With the House of Wonders shut, the Palace Museum and the Old Fort carry the seafront. The Anglican cathedral at Mkunazini stands on the slave market and keeps the underground chambers where captives were held before sale; the memorial figures in the courtyard are Clara Sornas's work. The Princess Salme Museum, one small room, tells of the sultan's daughter who eloped to Hamburg in 1866.

When to go to Zanzibar

The month to avoid is March — around 32°C (90°F) with roughly 18 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: June is the sweet spot, March the month most people skip.
