Amsterdam on a Budget: What €100, €220 and €500 a Day Actually Get You
A concrete, three-tier look at daily costs in Amsterdam — lodging, food, getting around and museums — so you can plan a realistic euro budget instead of guessing.
Where the money actually goes
Amsterdam is an expensive city with two cheap parts. Lodging is the dominant line and the one the city’s hotel-supply restrictions and 12.5% tourist tax push hardest; museums are consistently around €25 a head. Against that, getting around is genuinely cheap — GVB Max caps contactless travel at €10.50 a day and a day ticket is €10 — and the best of the city centre, the canals, markets, parks, hofjes and the ferries to Noord, costs nothing at all. The tiers below are per person per day, excluding flights, with tourist tax folded in.
≈ €100 / day — lean
A hostel bed or a budget room in Noord or Oud-West, supermarket breakfasts and market lunches (Albert Cuyp, Ten Kate), walking plus one GVB day ticket, and one paid museum every other day. This is a perfectly good Amsterdam — the canal belt is free to walk through — and it works best from November to March.
- Sleep: hostel bed or budget Noord room — roughly €45–70.
- Food: supermarket and market food, one cheap sit-down — roughly €25–40.
- Transport + sights: walking, a €10 GVB day ticket, free ferries and parks — roughly €10–20.
≈ €220 / day — comfortable
A mid-range hotel in De Pijp, Oost or Oud-West (or half of a couple’s room in the centre), one proper restaurant dinner plus casual eating, contactless transit capped at €10.50, and a museum or a canal cruise most days. This is the tier most couples actually travel at here.
- Sleep: mid-range hotel, per person sharing — roughly €90–150.
- Food: one restaurant dinner plus casual — roughly €55–95.
- Transport + sights: GVB cap or day ticket, one €25 museum or a cruise — roughly €30–55.
≈ €500 / day — generous
A canal-house boutique or a Museum Quarter grande dame, restaurant dinners without checking prices, taxis instead of trams, and private tours, a small-boat charter or a Concertgebouw ticket. At this level the constraint stops being money and starts being the museum booking calendar, which no budget can bypass.
- Sleep: canal-house boutique or luxury hotel, per person sharing — roughly €200–350.
- Food: restaurant meals and drinks — roughly €120–200.
- Transport + experiences: taxis, private tours or a boat charter — roughly €60–130.
The savings that are actually worth taking
Sleep one ring out from the canals — De Pijp, Oud-West, Oost, Noord — and you save more per night than every other economy combined, for about eight extra minutes on a tram. Tap in with a bank card rather than buying tickets, since the €10.50 GVB Max cap applies automatically with nothing to arrange. Drink the tap water, which is excellent and free. Eat lunch at a market and spend the money on dinner. And do the City Card arithmetic honestly: it is a genuine saving on a museum-heavy trip and a waste on a wandering one.
