First Time in Perth: The Mistakes That Waste a Day (and How to Avoid Them)

Giving Perth one night on the way somewhere else

Perth is where long-haul flights land, so it gets treated as a stopover. The problem is that its three best days are three separate places: the city and Kings Park, Fremantle, and Rottnest Island. None of them combine well, because the island is a ferry and Fremantle is a half-hour train ride at the other end of the line. One night buys you the city and nothing else. Three nights is the honest minimum.

Assuming the beach is a walk from your hotel

The CBD sits on the Swan River, not the ocean — the coast is a separate journey west. Cottesloe is a train down the Fremantle line plus a walk downhill to the sand. Scarborough has no train at all and is reached by the 990 bus. Rottnest is a boat. Book a city hotel expecting to swim before breakfast and you will spend your mornings in transit instead.

• Cottesloe: Fremantle line to Cottesloe station, then roughly a ten-minute walk down to the beach.
• Scarborough: the 990 bus from Perth or from Glendalough station — frequent, but a bus, not a train.
• Rottnest: ferry from Fremantle (about 30 minutes) or the much longer run from Elizabeth Quay in the city.

Paying for trips that are already free

Perth quietly gives a lot of transit away and visitors keep buying it. Four CAT bus routes run free around the central city and Fremantle; the central Free Transit Zone means bus and train journeys that start and end inside it cost nothing; and since 1 January 2026 every other journey is a single flat Go Anywhere Fare for three hours anywhere on the network, cheapest on a SmartRider card with autoload. Sunday travel is free with SmartRider or contactless. Get the card at a station on day one and stop thinking about fares.

Turning up on the wrong day of the week

Two closures catch people out repeatedly. The Fremantle Markets trade Friday, Saturday and Sunday only (plus Monday public holidays), so a Tuesday in Freo is a very different, much quieter town. And the Art Gallery of Western Australia — free general admission, right in the Perth Cultural Centre — is closed on Tuesdays. Slot Fremantle onto a weekend and keep Tuesday for Kings Park, the river or the coast.

Planning Margaret River as a day trip

Margaret River is about three hours south of Perth by road, each way. People still try it, and they spend six hours in a car to taste two wines in a hurry. Give it two nights of its own or skip it. For an actual day out of Perth, the Swan Valley is thirty minutes away and does the same wine-and-brewery job, and the Pinnacles are about two hours north — a long day but a real one.

Underestimating the sun, and misreading the sea breeze

Summer here is dry, cloudless and unforgiving — 30°C is an ordinary December day and the UV is severe well before noon. The local rhythm exists for a reason: do Kings Park, the ferry or the walking early, then be at the beach in the afternoon when the south-westerly sea breeze known as the Fremantle Doctor arrives and drops the temperature. On the days it fails to show up, the city bakes. Also swim between the red-and-yellow flags on patrolled beaches and nowhere else — this is open ocean with real rips, not a bay.
