Quebec City on a Budget: What C$80, C$170 and C$360 a Day Actually Get You

What actually drives the number

Two things move a Quebec City budget: where you sleep relative to the walls, and when you come. The old city is small enough that you walk nearly everything, so transport is close to a rounding error — an RTC day pass is C$10.50 on the fare grid in effect since 1 July 2026, and many days you will not buy one. Museums run roughly C$22–27 for an adult. Lodging is the swing factor, and it doubles between a November Tuesday and a Carnaval Saturday. The tiers below are per person per day, exclude flights, and assume the ~15% sales tax and 15–20% tipping are already folded in.

≈ C$80 / day — lean

A hostel bed or a shared apartment outside the walls, food from Saint-Roch grocers and casual counters, and a day built on things that cost nothing: the ramparts, Dufferin Terrace, Place-Royale, the Plains of Abraham. Comfortably achievable in April–May or November, tight in July and effectively impossible during Carnaval week.

• Sleep: hostel bed or shared rental in Saint-Roch / Limoilou — roughly C$45–70.
• Food: groceries, bakeries and casual counters — roughly C$25–40.
• Transport + activities: mostly walking, an occasional RTC day pass at C$10.50, free sights — roughly C$5–15.

A mid-range hotel in Saint-Roch or Montcalm, or an apartment in Saint-Jean-Baptiste; one proper restaurant meal a day plus casual eating; a museum or a guided walk most days, and a booked half-day out to Montmorency and Île d’Orléans somewhere in the trip. This is where most couples land.

• Sleep: mid-range hotel or a registered apartment outside the walls — roughly C$85–150 per person.
• Food: one restaurant meal plus casual — roughly C$50–85.
• Transport + activities: RTC as needed, a museum (C$22–27) or a guided tour — roughly C$25–50.

≈ C$360 / day — generous

A heritage hotel inside the walls or a river-view room, restaurant meals chosen without checking the right-hand column, taxis instead of hills, and the premium experiences — a private Charlevoix or Île d’Orléans day, a night at the ice hotel, a table at one of the city’s serious kitchens. At this tier the walls of the old city are the only thing still constraining you.

• Sleep: heritage hotel inside the walls or a premium rental — roughly C$300–600 per room.
• Food: restaurant meals with wine — roughly C$110–190.
• Transport + experiences: taxis and private or small-group day trips — roughly C$70–140.

Where the free value is

Walking the ramparts, Dufferin Terrace and the Governors’ Promenade, Place-Royale and the Petit-Champlain lane, the whole cliff-top sweep of the Plains of Abraham, the Old Port and the view back at the skyline from the Lévis ferry crossing — none of it costs anything beyond the ferry’s small fare. Add the MNBAQ’s half-price Wednesday evening and a February toboggan run on Dufferin Terrace, and the paid list gets short. Spend on one memorable meal and one trip out of the city; let the old town be free.
