SXSW in March, both October weekends of Austin City Limits and the Formula One race each multiply hotel rates and choke I-35, so check the calendar before booking anything. Barton Springs shuts Thursday mornings. Franklin's queue forms before opening and ends when the brisket does. Scooters are everywhere and the city restricts where they may be ridden and left.
Austin after dark
Austin's districts are genuinely distinct. Sixth Street closes to cars at weekends and skews young and loud; Rainey Street is a row of converted bungalows with yards and food trucks; the Red River Cultural District, with the Mohawk, Stubb's and Cheer Up Charlies, is where touring bands actually play.
