Bordeaux's trams draw power from a ground-level rail through the historic centre rather than overhead wires, so the lines look invisible, and stops are frequent enough that a 5.20-euro day pass usually beats singles at 1.80. Saint-Emilion is 45 minutes away by train, but Medoc chateaux effectively require a car and a booking made in advance.
Bordeaux after dark
The squares carry the evening here: Place du Parlement, Place Saint-Pierre and the lanes between them fill with terraces, while Place de la Victoire belongs to students and stays cheap and loud. Quai des Chartrons and the Darwin site at Bastide, a former barracks turned skatepark and food hall, run the alternative programming. Last trams are earlier than you would like.

The Miroir d'eau exists to be run through and children treat it as a free splash pad all summer. Darwin at Bastide has an indoor skatepark and open ground to roam. The riverside Jardin Public holds a puppet theatre and a natural history museum. Trams are step-free and pram-friendly; the cobbles of the historic centre are decidedly not.
When the weather turns in Bordeaux
Bassins des Lumieres is the strongest wet-weather card in the city, vast, indoors and warm. Add Musee d'Aquitaine or the Musee des Beaux-Arts near the Hotel de Ville, then take cover along Rue Sainte-Catherine, 1.2 kilometres of pedestrianised shopping with arcades and galleries running off it. Marche des Capucins is roofed and trades into the early afternoon.
