What first-timers get wrong in Cabo San Lucas
The arrivals hall at San José del Cabo airport is a gauntlet of men in polo shirts with badges and clipboards asking which resort you are at; they are timeshare recruiters and unlicensed drivers, not airport staff, so walk through to the kerb. Pre-booked shared shuttles run about 25 dollars a head against 90 or more on arrival. Water taxis to the Arch cost around 20 dollars, quoted at 50.
What's actually worth your time in Cabo San Lucas
El Arco at Land's End is the sight and it is a boat trip, not a walk: pangas leave the marina and Médano beach for a 45-minute loop past the sea lion colony and Pelican Rock. Lover's Beach on the Sea of Cortez side is swimmable, while Divorce Beach, thirty metres away on the Pacific side, drowns people and has no lifeguard. Médano is the town beach and the busiest sand.
Cabo San Lucas's museums, and which one to pick
This is not a museum town and no amount of research changes that. The small Museo de Historia Natural, in the old schoolhouse off Plaza Amelia Wilkes, covers Baja geology and Pericú rock art in a couple of rooms. The better cultural half-day is thirty minutes east in San José del Cabo, whose Gallery District along Calle Obregón runs an art walk on Thursday evenings from November to June.
Cabo San Lucas with kids, realistically
Médano is the only calm swimming beach in Cabo San Lucas itself, and even there jet skis and vendors work the sand hard. Whale watching from mid-December to mid-April is the outing that holds children, with humpbacks breaching close in from January through March. Pacific-facing beaches are lethal for swimming and inconsistently signed. Sun at twenty-two degrees north in June punishes pale skin fast.
When the weather turns in Cabo San Lucas
Rain is rare enough to count as an event; the desert takes roughly twenty centimetres a year, almost all between August and October, which is also when a chubasco can flood the Transpeninsular highway. A wet day means the Puerto Paraíso mall on the marina, a resort spa, or driving inland to Todos Santos for galleries. Boat trips are cancelled rather than rescheduled.
