Two sites carry this city. Constitution Hill stacks the Old Fort and the Number Four prison beneath the Constitutional Court, and the Apartheid Museum in Ormonde hands you a ticket randomly marked white or non-white, then makes you enter through the matching gate. Vilakazi Street in Orlando West is the only street anywhere to have housed two Nobel laureates. Gold Reef City beside the museum is a theme park.
Johannesburg's museums, and which one to pick
Give the Apartheid Museum three hours; it does not flinch and it does not summarise well. Constitution Hill's court is free to enter while the prison sections carry a tour fee of roughly 80 to 100 rand. The Origins Centre at Wits handles southern African rock art and hominin evolution. An hour west, Maropeng and the Sterkfontein caves hold the Cradle of Humankind's fossil record for about 190 rand.
Johannesburg after dark
Evenings here are neighbourhood-bound and driven to, never strolled between. Braamfontein around Juta Street is student-loud and the closest thing to walkable; Maboneng, Melville's 7th Street and Newtown each keep separate crowds. Soweto's shisa nyamas and the Vilakazi strip peak on Sunday afternoons rather than Saturday nights. Everyone e-hails door to door, and nobody treats a taxi rank as a starting point after dark.
What to eat in Johannesburg
Joburg's own street food is the kota, a quarter loaf hollowed out and loaded with chips, polony, atchar and cheese, sold from township spaza shops rather than restaurants. Shisa nyama is the institution: choose raw meat at the counter, hand it across to the coals, eat it with pap and chakalaka. Neighbourgoods Market in Braamfontein trades Saturdays nine to three in a converted silo car park.
Johannesburg with kids, realistically
Sprawl beats spontaneity in a metro of sixteen hundred square kilometres with no walkable centre, so plan one anchor per day and drive to it. Gold Reef City's rides and the zoo in Parkview suit under-tens, while the Apartheid Museum's content really needs twelve upward. The Gautrain is clean and pushchair-friendly between Park Station, Rosebank and Sandton, but very little else useful sits on its line.
