What things cost in Mallorca

Cathedral entry is 10 euro, or 25 with the terraces. Train and tram together cost 40 euro return from Palma to Port de Soller. A menu del dia in Palma runs 14 to 18, an individual ensaimada 2 to 3, and an EMT city bus ride around 2. Sunbed pairs with an umbrella on the busy Calvia beaches go for 15 to 20.

Mallorca after dark

Palma's evening is a neighbourhood matter: Santa Catalina for small bars and vermouth, La Llotja's medieval lanes for late drinking, the Paseo Maritimo for clubs that only fill after two. That is a different country from Magaluf and s'Arenal twenty minutes away, where the resort strips run on cheap shots and shut for winter. Locals sit down to dinner at ten and take their time.

What to eat in Mallorca

An ensaimada, coiled, lard-laminated and dusted with icing sugar, is the thing people carry home in a hexagonal box. Eat pa amb oli with sobrassada, and tumbet through the summer. At Mercat de l'Olivar and the Santa Catalina market you can buy fish at a stall and have it cooked at the counter. Frit mallorqui and arros brut belong to the interior villages, not the coast.

Mallorca with kids, realistically

The wooden 1912 Soller train out of Palma is the reliable win, an hour and five minutes across the Tramuntana for 23 euro one way, then a 10-euro tram down to the port. Coves del Drach ends with a classical quartet playing from a boat on an underground lake. Alcudia and Es Trenc shelve slowly. Palma's old town is cobbled but manageable with wheels.

When the weather turns in Mallorca

Tramuntana downpours are genuinely heavy in winter, and Palma absorbs them well: the cathedral, Es Baluard and the Banys Arabs sit within a short walk, and Mercat de l'Olivar is covered. Coves del Drach and Coves dels Hams are underground and indifferent to weather. Failing that, the Valldemossa charterhouse and its short piano recital fill an afternoon indoors.

When to go to Mallorca

The month to avoid is July — around 33°C (91°F) with roughly 2 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: October is the sweet spot, July the month most people skip.
