A main at the Stagerstubli is CHF 22 to 32, hotel half-board typically adds CHF 40 to 60 per head, and a beer is about CHF 6.50.

Mürren after dark

Effectively none, which is exactly why people choose Murren over Wengen. Hotel bars and the Stagerstubli hold a handful of guests until ten or eleven, and since the last cable car down to Lauterbrunnen leaves in the evening you are committed either way. Inferno race week each January is the one stretch when the village genuinely stays up late.

What to eat in Mürren

With about a dozen kitchens serving 450 residents, dinner means hotel dining rooms and half-board is genuinely the sensible booking. The Stagerstubli on the main street comes closest to a village pub kitchen, doing sausage, rosti and barley soup. Restaurant Tham serves Chinese food, oddly and well. The tiny Coop shuts mid-afternoon, so buy trail lunches in the morning.

Mürren with kids, realistically

Car-free streets let children walk ahead of you, which is rare in the Alps. The Allmendhubel funicular lands at a large adventure playground and the Flower Park trail, and the Northface Trail is manageable for steady eight-year-olds. The Alpine Sports Centre has an indoor pool and courts. Prams work along the main street but not on the mountain paths.

When the weather turns in Mürren

Choices are honestly thin, which is the trade you make for the quiet: the Alpine Sports Centre pool, hotel saunas, and the cable car down to the valley for Trummelbach, which sits inside a cliff and needs no sunshine. If cloud is merely low rather than deep, the Schilthorn sometimes stands above it, so ask staff at the valley station before paying.

When to go to Mürren

The month to avoid is January — around 1°C (34°F) with roughly 13 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: August is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
