What's actually worth your time in Bucharest

The Palace of the Parliament is compulsory: the heaviest building on earth, still only partly occupied, and you need your passport at the door because it remains a working legislature. Book the standard tour at sixty lei rather than arriving hopeful. Thirty seconds off the Lipscani drinking streets, the 1724 courtyard of Stavropoleos Monastery is the best free thing in the centre.

Bucharest after dark

The Old Town's Lipscani grid is wall-to-wall terraces and shot promotions, largely surrendered to visitors. Control, on Strada Constantin Mille, and Expirat are where the city's own music crowd goes, both running well past four. Summer relocates everything to the terase, open-air garden bars scattered across the centre. Nothing begins before eleven, and a nine o'clock dinner counts as early.

Bucharest's museums, and which one to pick

The Village Museum beside Herastrau lake is no diorama; peasant houses, churches and windmills were dismantled across the countryside from 1936 onward and rebuilt there, and admission is forty lei. The National Museum of Art occupies the old Royal Palace, split between a Romanian medieval wing and a European one. MNAC, the contemporary museum, sits inside a wing of the Parliament palace itself.

Bucharest with kids, realistically

Therme Bucuresti at Balotesti, half an hour north, devotes a whole zone to 1.7 kilometres of slides and answers both rain and heat for anyone over three. In town, Antipa's natural history halls were rebuilt in 2011 and are properly interactive. Cismigiu, laid out in 1847, rents rowing boats. Be warned that pavements are cratered and parked on, so a robust buggy is essential.

When the weather turns in Bucharest

Pasajul Macca-Villacrosse, the yellow glass-roofed arcade off Calea Victoriei, is a covered street of cafes that exists for exactly this weather. Carturesti Carusel offers six white floors of books inside a restored merchant's house. The Parliament tour keeps you indoors ninety minutes. And Therme, thirty minutes out, is a wet-weather plan roughly the size of a suburb, open until midnight.

When to go to Bucharest

The month to avoid is January — around 6°C (43°F) with roughly 7 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
