What's actually worth your time in Marrakech

Ben Youssef Madrasa, reopened in 2022 after a long restoration, is the best single ticket in the medina: carved cedar and zellij around a still courtyard. Bahia Palace repays a slow hour. The Saadian Tombs funnel a large queue past one small chamber and are the most oversold stop in the city. Koutoubia is exterior-only for non-Muslims, and Menara Gardens is a photograph, not an outing.

Marrakech after dark

The genuine evening is Jemaa el-Fna itself, where a hundred numbered food stalls are wheeled in at dusk, Gnaoua drum circles form on the flagstones, and the whole apparatus is dismantled again by one in the morning. Licensed bars barely exist inside the medina walls; Gueliz and Hivernage hold them, with Theatro staged inside an old playhouse and Pacha out along the Route de l'Ourika.

Marrakech's museums, and which one to pick

Studio KO's brick-latticed building on Rue Yves Saint Laurent shows rotating couture from the designer's archive, and next door the Berber Museum occupies his former painting studio inside Jardin Majorelle. Maison de la Photographie holds glass-plate and early colour images of Morocco, and hides a rooftop terrace above the medina roofline. Dar El Bacha's Musee des Confluences includes the Bacha Coffee room downstairs.

Marrakech with kids, realistically

A pram is unusable in the medina, where motorbikes cut through lanes barely two people wide, so bring a carrier. Le Jardin Secret has a tower to climb and a quiet courtyard for resetting a meltdown. Oasiria water park south of town rescues a hot afternoon, and July temperatures above forty make the middle of the day unworkable outdoors. Walk past the chained Barbary macaques.

When the weather turns in Marrakech

Rain here amounts to a handful of days between November and March, but when it arrives the unpaved stretches of the medina turn to red slurry and the covered souk lanes drip through their slatted roofs. Book a hammam instead, at Les Bains de Marrakech or a neighbourhood one with a scrub and black soap. A half-day cooking class at Amal in Gueliz fills the rest.

When to go to Marrakech

The month to avoid is July — around 40°C (104°F) with roughly 0 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: January is the sweet spot, July the month most people skip.
