What's actually worth your time in Mexico City

The Templo Mayor excavation beside the Zocalo earns its ticket because you walk the Mexica city Cortes buried under the cathedral. Teotihuacan, about ninety minutes northeast from Terminal Norte, deserves a whole morning before the sun reaches the Pyramid of the Sun. Castillo de Chapultepec repays the climb for Juan O Gorman's murals. The Angel de la Independencia on Reforma is a traffic-island photo stop.

Mexico City after dark

Roma Norte and Condesa carry the mezcal crowd, with Licoreria Limantour and Hanky Panky behind an unmarked door, and they fill closer to midnight than to ten. Plaza Garibaldi and Salon Tenampa put mariachis on the floor for a per-song fee. Old Centro cantinas such as La Opera, with its ceiling bullet hole, close early. Most bars call last orders around two or three.

Mexico City's museums, and which one to pick

Antropologia charges foreigners 210 pesos in 2026 and 105 for residents, and shuts Mondays as nearly every INAH site does; give the Sala Mexica and the Sun Stone two hours minimum. Casa Azul in Coyoacan runs 320 pesos for foreigners on timed slots that disappear weeks ahead. Museo Soumaya in Polanco is always free. Sunday entry goes free at Templo Mayor, Tamayo and MAM, but only for Mexicans and residents.

Mexico City with kids, realistically

Bosque de Chapultepec absorbs an entire day: the zoo costs nothing, Papalote Museo del Nino is built for touching, and the lake rents pedal boats. Xochimilco trajineras suit ages five and up, being flat-bottomed boats with no railings and food canoes pulling alongside. Metro stairs and crowding punish strollers, so a carrier travels better here. At 2,240 metres, small children tire far earlier than parents expect.

When the weather turns in Mexico City

Rain here is a schedule, not a surprise: from June through September it arrives most afternoons and clears by evening, so put indoor plans after three. Biblioteca Vasconcelos beside Buenavista is free and hallucinatory. La Ciudadela craft market is roofed, Casa de los Azulejos serves lunch under tile, and Cineteca Nacional in Xoco screens restorations. Streets flood quickly, so avoid the underpasses.

When to go to Mexico City

The month to avoid is July — around 23°C (73°F) with roughly 27 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: February is the sweet spot, July the month most people skip.
