What's actually worth your time in New York

Skip the observation-deck arms race unless one particular view sells you: Top of the Rock frames the Empire State Building, which the Empire State cannot do for itself. The Staten Island Ferry passes Liberty Island free, around the clock. Statue of Liberty crown tickets disappear months ahead. The High Line and the Brooklyn Bridge walk cost nothing and beat most paid attractions.

New York after dark

The subway runs 24 hours, which no other American city manages, and that alone stretches New York nights. Bars can legally serve until 4am. The Lower East Side and East Village give the densest walkable options, while Bushwick and Williamsburg pull the later crowd out along the L. Expect ID checks regardless of how grey your hair is.

New York's museums, and which one to pick

The Met is $30, yet New York State residents and students from New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut still pay what they wish down to a cent with ID. MoMA also charges $30 and opens free to state residents on Fridays from 5:30 to 8:30pm with a reservation. The Frick, the Whitney, and the Tenement Museum give more per dollar than either giant.

New York with kids, realistically

Subway stations are largely stair-only and the elevators that exist break often, so a folding buggy beats a large one every time. The American Museum of Natural History and the Central Park Zoo anchor days with younger children, while the Intrepid and the Staten Island Ferry work at any age. Broadway matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays fit bedtimes that eight o'clock curtains destroy.

When the weather turns in New York

The Met alone can absorb a wet day, and Museum Mile puts the Guggenheim and Neue Galerie within minutes on foot. Grand Central's lower concourse, the New York Public Library's Rose Reading Room, and Chelsea Market all shelter you for nothing. The subway is the dry connective tissue between them, which is exactly when a $35 weekly cap starts earning out.

The month to avoid is January — around 5°C (41°F) with roughly 11 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: October is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
