What's actually worth your time in Puerto Vallarta

The Malecón is the free one, a kilometre and a half of seafront studded with bronzes including Sergio Bustamante's ladder-climbing figures and Alejandro Colunga's Rotunda del Mar chairs. Behind it, the crown on Our Lady of Guadalupe copies the Empress Carlota's. Los Muertos pier lights its sail-shaped mast at night. Boca de Tomatlán, south of town, is where water taxis leave for beaches no road reaches.

Puerto Vallarta after dark

Zona Romántica is one of Latin America's most established gay resort districts, and the bars along Lázaro Cárdenas and Ignacio L. Vallarta run late and welcome everyone. The Malecón clubs are louder and younger. Blue Chairs on Los Muertos beach turns from beach club into evening bar without pausing. Nothing starts before eleven, and taxis price by zone rather than by meter.

Puerto Vallarta's museums, and which one to pick

There is no major museum here and the naval history collection on the Malecón is thin. What Vallarta offers instead is the small archaeological museum on Isla Cuale and the Vallarta Botanical Garden, twenty-four kilometres south up the Horcones valley, with orchid conservatories and thousands of species. Galleries across Centro and Zona Romántica run a Wednesday-evening art walk from late October through May.

Puerto Vallarta with kids, realistically

Municipal buses cost eleven pesos with the Jalisco subsidy and reach nearly everywhere, which serves families better than taxis. Los Muertos beach calms down in the afternoon. Marietas Islands snorkelling carries a federal cap of a hundred and sixteen visitors a day at the Hidden Beach with a fifteen to twenty minute limit, and the beach closes Mondays and Tuesdays. Centro's cobbles defeat pushchairs.

When the weather turns in Puerto Vallarta

The rains fall June to October and usually come hard at night rather than through the day, which visitors get wrong in both directions. A genuinely wet afternoon means Galerías Vallarta, a cooking class, or the sheltered palapa restaurants along Los Muertos. Hurricane risk peaks in September, the month when a good number of restaurants close for their annual break anyway.

The month to avoid is July — around 31°C (88°F) with roughly 23 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: March is the sweet spot, July the month most people skip.
