What's actually worth your time in Salzburg

Hohensalzburg dominates every sightline and was never taken by siege; the FestungsBahn funicular from Festungsgasse with entry included costs 19.20 euros for adults and 7.30 for children six to fourteen, and the Golden Hall justifies it. Getreidegasse's wrought-iron guild signs are a photo stop rather than a visit. Hellbrunn's trick fountains soak visitors on purpose from April into November.

Salzburg after dark

Evenings lean cultural rather than late, built around Festival performances and Mozart concerts staged in the fortress and St Peter's, with beer gardens closing near eleven. Hellbrunn's trick fountains are engineered practical jokes from the seventeenth century and children love being soaked, so pack a change of clothes. The Marionette Theatre performs full-length operas with puppets, and Haus der Natur combines a science centre with an aquarium and reptile house. The Old Town is compact and walkable, though its cobbles and the fortress ramp punish pushchairs.

When the weather turns in Salzburg

The DomQuartier circuit keeps you under a roof through four connected buildings, the neatest wet-day trick in the city. Haus der Natur absorbs half a day on its own. The funicular means reaching Hohensalzburg without climbing in rain, and the Salzburg Museum in the Neue Residenz sits right on Mozartplatz. Covered arcades run off Getreidegasse between shops.
