Wengen after dark

For fifty-one weeks a year this is a village of roughly 1,300 people whose bars, the Tanne and Sina's and the Crystal, hold perhaps eighty drinkers between them and empty by eleven. Lauberhorn weekend in January inverts that completely, when tens of thousands arrive by train for the World Cup downhill and the place drinks like somewhere else. Any night, the last cogwheel train down to Lauterbrunnen sets the real closing time.

What to eat in Wengen

Everything eaten up here arrived by cogwheel train, and the prices say so. Two small grocers serve the village with no real supermarket, so self-caterers stock up in Lauterbrunnen or Interlaken before riding up. Mountain-hut cooking is what to seek: Oepfelchueechli, apple rings in batter under cinnamon sugar, and a Kaeseschnitte at the huts along the trails toward Kleine Scheidegg. Hotel dining rooms serve half-board in fixed sittings, so walk-ins should ring ahead.

What first-timers get wrong in Wengen

Driving here is impossible. Cars go into the multi-storey at Lauterbrunnen station and the Wengernalpbahn covers the last fifteen minutes, so pack for platforms and steps rather than boot space. Ask your hotel to send an electric luggage cart to meet the train; most will. The Swiss Travel Pass discounts this line rather than covering it outright. And check the final departure back up, because the timetable ends earlier than expected.

When the weather turns in Wengen

Cover is genuinely scarce here. Truemmelbach Falls, two stops down and a short bus from Lauterbrunnen, sends ten glacial cascades thundering inside the mountain and is reached by tunnel lift, so weather stops mattering once you are through. Beyond that the plan is a train, with Interlaken about forty-five minutes away for shops and the Kursaal, or your hotel's pool if it has one. Plenty of them do not.

What things cost in Wengen

The cable car up to Maennlichen from the village is CHF 62 return or CHF 31 one way, with the rooftop Royal Ride adding about five. A hiking ticket through to Kleine Scheidegg starts near CHF 31. Leaving a car in the Lauterbrunnen garage runs roughly CHF 20 a day while you are up here. Dinner is about CHF 25 somewhere modest and upward of CHF 50 for a main in the hotel restaurants.

When to go to Wengen

The month to avoid is January — around 3°C (37°F) with roughly 14 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: August is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
