What's actually worth your time in Osaka

The castle tower is a 1931 concrete reconstruction with a lift inside, but its 1,200 yen ticket now includes the Toyotomi stone wall museum opened in 2025, which is the genuinely new thing to see. The Glico running man on Dotonbori is a crowd and a photograph, nothing more. Umeda Sky Building answers better on height: two towers joined by an escalator crossing open air into a rooftop observatory.

Osaka's museums, and which one to pick

Almost all of the National Museum of Art lies underground on Nakanoshima, announced above ground only by a steel sculpture, and it closes Mondays. Next door the Nakanoshima Museum of Art opened in 2022 as a black cube and owns a Modigliani reclining nude. The Museum of Housing and Living rebuilds an Edo-period Osaka street indoors at full scale, lit on a cycle from dawn to night. Cupnoodles Museum in Ikeda charges no entry.

Osaka after dark

Namba runs loud and late along the Dotonbori canal, neon reflected in water nobody swims in. Ura-Namba, the grid of lanes behind Nankai station, is where locals drink standing at counters that open by four in the afternoon. Kitashinchi north of the river is the expensive, suited version. Amerikamura gathers a younger crowd around Triangle Park. Last trains still cut the evening off near midnight.

What to eat in Osaka

Kuidaore, eating yourself bankrupt, is the local self-description. Takoyaki and okonomiyaki are everywhere, but kushikatsu belongs to Shinsekai and the communal sauce pot carries one absolute rule: no second dip. Kuromon Ichiba Market sells sashimi and grilled scallops to eat standing, at tourist prices since the wholesalers went. Kitsune udon was invented at Usami-tei Matsubaya near Shinsaibashi and is still served in the same room.

Osaka with kids, realistically

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan walks you down a spiral around a central tank holding whale sharks, and it is stroller-friendly the whole way, which is rare in Japan. Universal Studios Japan added Super Nintendo World in 2021, where timed area entry is separate from park admission and sells out early. The Tempozan Ferris wheel and the Santa Maria harbour cruise fill the same afternoon for under-tens.

When to go to Osaka

The month to avoid is August — around 33°C (91°F) with roughly 15 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: November is the sweet spot, August the month most people skip.
