When the weather turns in Cappadocia

Rain turns the tuff paths to slick clay, so valley hiking is out of the question. Underground cities are indifferent to weather and hold around thirteen degrees all year. Avanos pottery workshops will sit you at a kick-wheel for an hour indoors. Urgup's wineries do covered tastings and the hammams in Goreme and Urgup fill an afternoon. Balloons, needless to say, stay grounded.

Cappadocia's museums, and which one to pick

There is no conventional gallery here, because the museums are the rock itself. Zelve, an abandoned monastic village across three valleys, is a genuine alternative to Goreme with a fraction of the coaches. Pasabag's mushroom-capped chimneys held hermit cells. In Avanos, Chez Galip's pottery workshop on the Kizilirmak keeps a cellar of visitors' hair clippings, which is either folk art or a health inspection pending.

What to eat in Cappadocia

Testi kebabi arrives sealed inside a clay pot the waiter cracks open at your table, and it needs ordering hours ahead in Goreme or Urgup. Manti here means the tiny Kayseri dumplings under garlic yoghurt. The region grows Emir and Kalecik Karasi grapes, and Turasan and Kocabag in Urgup both pour tastings. Dried apricots and pumpkin-seed oil come off the weekly market stalls.

What first-timers get wrong in Cappadocia

Weather cancels balloon flights often enough that booking them for your final morning is a mistake. Nevsehir and Kayseri airports are each roughly an hour away by shuttle, and the Kayseri road holds up better in winter. Rooms advertised as caves are sometimes concrete imitations, so study the photographs. Dolmus minibuses loop Urgup, Goreme and Avanos cheaply but stop by early evening.

What things cost in Cappadocia

A balloon flight is the single largest cost of any Cappadocia trip, priced in euro and running into the low hundreds per person for a standard basket, more for the smaller deluxe ones. A testi kebabi dinner with a bottle of Turasan is a small fraction of that. The dolmus loop costs tens of lira, and the major sites are priced in euro for foreign visitors.

When to go to Cappadocia

The month to avoid is January — around 6°C (43°F) with roughly 10 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
