Where to stay in Bucharest

Bucharest lodging is cheap enough that the usual budget-versus-location trade-off barely applies — you can afford the centre. The real question is noise. The Old Town’s pedestrian streets are wall-to-wall bars and the sound carries into upper floors until the early hours on weekends, so a room that looks perfect on a map can be unsleepable on a Friday. Decide whether you want to walk out into that, be five quiet minutes from it, or sleep in the leafy north and ride the metro in. Then choose hotel or apartment.

Best neighborhoods, by traveler

Centrul Vechi (Lipscani / Old Town)

Mid-range prices

Best for: Short trips and night-out travellers who want the bars, the terraces and Stavropoleos on the doorstep

Vibe: Cobbled, crowded, loud after dark

Trade-off: Genuinely noisy Thursday to Saturday — ask for an interior courtyard room or a high floor, and expect stag groups in summer.

Calea Victoriei & Piața Revoluției

Higher prices

Best for: Travellers who want the elegant, "Little Paris" version of the city and the museums within a five-minute walk

Vibe: Grand, historic, dressed-up

Trade-off: The city’s priciest strip, and the avenue itself carries traffic on weekdays — the quiet comes only when it pedestrianises at weekends in the warm half of the year.

Universitate & Piața Romană

Mixed prices

Best for: Anyone who wants maximum metro convenience and a short walk to both the Old Town and Calea Victoriei

Vibe: Central, functional, everyday-urban

Trade-off: Magheru is a wide arterial boulevard — traffic noise instead of bar noise, and little charm on the street itself.

Dorobanți, Floreasca & Aviatorilor

Higher prices

Best for: Repeat visitors, business travellers and anyone here for the restaurants and the park rather than the sights

Vibe: Leafy, residential, well-off

Trade-off: A 10–20 minute metro ride from the historic core, so you commute to the sightseeing rather than stumbling into it.

Cotroceni

Mid-range prices

Best for: Slow travellers and architecture-minded visitors who want villa-lined streets and no nightlife at all

Vibe: Quiet, low-rise, local

Trade-off: Very thin hotel supply — this is rental-and-guesthouse territory, and it is west of the centre with fewer direct metro links.

Unirii & Tineretului

Budget prices

Best for: Budget-minded travellers and anyone whose main interest is the Palace of the Parliament and communist-era Bucharest

Vibe: Monumental, concrete, open

Trade-off: Architecturally severe and windswept at the boulevard scale, though Unirii is the city’s best metro interchange and the parks just south are excellent.
