Mürren hotels: how to choose
Mürren’s hotel market is tiny — a couple of dozen properties on one lane, not a district you can shop around in. That changes how you book: aspect and board matter more than brand, dates matter more than star rating, and the shoulder-season closures catch people out. Here is how to read it before you commit.
What hotels are like, village by village
Mürren village
Family-run alpine hotels and a small number of larger historic houses, most of them within a few minutes’ walk of both lift stations. The meaningful variable is whether the room faces the valley and the Eiger wall or the slope behind.
Nightly feel: High — the highest in the valley, and the valley-facing rooms carry a further premium.
Gimmelwald
A hostel and a handful of guest rooms in farmhouses. Simple, warm, and priced accordingly; catering is limited to what the house serves.
Nightly feel: Budget — the cheapest beds anywhere in this cluster.
Lauterbrunnen
The broadest conventional hotel and guesthouse choice in the valley, plus hostels, on the flat by the station and the river.
Nightly feel: Mid — usually well below Mürren for comparable comfort.
Wengen
A much deeper hotel market than Mürren, including grand old resort houses, all of it car-free and reached by the Wengernalp railway.
Nightly feel: High, and highest around the Lauberhorn race weekend in January.
Interlaken
Everything from international chains to hostels, with genuine price competition and year-round staffing — the fallback when the mountain villages are full or shut.
Nightly feel: Mixed — the widest spread of the five.
What surprises first-time hotel bookers
- There is no road, so there is no porter’s van and no taxi to the door. Whatever you bring, you carry from the lift station along the lane — soft bags beat hard cases on the last two hundred metres.
- The last cableway of the day is a real curfew. Miss it and you are in the valley for the night, so check the day’s last departure before booking a late dinner down below.
- Half-board is common and often worth taking. Mürren has only a handful of restaurants and they fill in season; a hotel that feeds you removes the evening’s only real logistical problem.
- Ask which way the room faces. The valley side looks straight at the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau; the other side looks at a hillside for the same money at some properties.
- Several hotels close outright in the shoulder gaps — roughly late October to early December, and again after the ski season ends. The mountain railways shut for maintenance in the same window: the Stechelberg–Gimmelwald–Mürren cableway is scheduled closed 19–30 October 2026, and the Allmendhubel funicular from 19 October to 11 December 2026.
- Air conditioning is neither offered nor needed at this altitude, but heating and a drying room are — check both if you are coming between November and April.
- The municipal visitor’s tax of CHF 5.60 per adult per night is added by the hotel, not included in the advertised rate. It buys the Gästekarte, so it is not a pure surcharge.
When to book
Book far ahead for the two hard peaks: the Christmas–New Year fortnight and the Inferno race week in January (the 83rd International Inferno Ski-Races run 20–23 January 2027), when the village fills with competitors and support crews. February half-term and the high-summer weeks from mid-July to late August are the next tier. The genuinely quiet, cheap windows are late April to mid-June and the second half of September into early October — but check that your hotel and the lifts you need are actually open, because that is exactly when both start closing for maintenance. Prefer free-cancellation rates: at a destination this weather-dependent, flexibility is worth more than a small discount.
