Paris vacation rentals: how to choose
A short-term rental can be the best-value Paris stay for families, groups and longer trips — more space, a kitchen and a residential neighborhood. But Paris regulates short lets more tightly than almost any other city, and a non-compliant listing can be cancelled on you. Choose a rental on the merits below, and only book a legal one.

Paris requires registered short-term rentals: a legal listing must display a city registration number, and an entire-home that is not the host’s primary residence is capped at 120 nights per year. A listing with no registration number, or a host who is cagey about it, is a red flag — these are the listings most likely to be removed, leaving you without a room on arrival.

Who a rental suits
Rentals win for families and groups who want separate bedrooms, for stays of five nights or more where a kitchen and laundry change the budget, and for travelers who would rather live in a real quartier than a hotel corridor. Solo and short couple trips usually do better in a hotel, where check-in and a front desk are effortless.
Verify before you book
- A visible city registration number on the listing (legality — the single most important check).
- Which floor it is on and whether there is a lift — many charming apartments are 4th–6th-floor walk-ups.
- Exact check-in logistics: self-check-in with a lockbox, or a host meet you must schedule around a flight.
- Whether the price includes cleaning and local taxes, which are often added at the end.
- Real recent reviews mentioning noise, water pressure and how responsive the host is.
- A genuine street address / neighborhood before you pay, so you know the Metro and the walk-up reality.
Where to look for rentals
For rentals specifically, the residential east (10th, 11th, 12th) and the outer Left Bank (14th, 15th) offer the most space for the money while staying a short Metro ride from the sights. The Marais and Saint-Germain have beautiful apartments but at hotel-level prices and often up several flights of stairs.
