What's actually worth your time in Crete
Knossos costs 20 euro and is heavily reconstructed, since Arthur Evans poured concrete and repainted frescoes there in the 1920s; read it as one man's interpretation and go anyway. Samaria Gorge is sixteen kilometres, one-way and downhill only, open roughly May to October, and ends at Agia Roumeli where a boat rather than a road takes you out. Balos and Elafonisi demand an early start.
Crete after dark
Chania's Venetian harbour and the lanes behind it fill from ten and run past two, with rakadika serving small plates rather than clubs. Heraklion's night belongs to students around Korai and Handakos. Malia's main strip is a separate universe, packed from June to September and dead the rest of the year. Village panigiria in August go on until dawn with lyra players.
What things cost in Crete
Knossos is 20 euro and the Heraklion museum another 20, though EU citizens under 25 enter both free on production of ID. A taverna main runs 9 to 14, a Mythos 3 to 4, and dakos as a starter about 5. Samaria's park fee is small, but the boat out of Agia Roumeli plus the bus back is the real cost of that day.
Crete's museums, and which one to pick
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum, also 20 euro, holds the material Knossos no longer has: the Phaistos Disc, the faience snake goddesses, the bull-leaping fresco and the Agia Triada sarcophagus. Seeing it before the palace makes the site legible. Chania's Archaeological Museum moved into a purpose-built hall in 2022, and Spinalonga, the Venetian fortress island used as a leper colony until 1957, is reachable only by boat.
What to eat in Crete
Cretan food is its own cuisine: dakos, a barley rusk under grated tomato and mizithra; wild stamnagathi greens; kalitsounia pastries sweet or cheese-filled; chochlioi boubouristi, snails fried face-down in the pan. Tsikoudia usually appears free at the end with something sweet, and waving it away reads as rude. Chania's cross-shaped covered agora, built in 1913, is where to buy the cheese.
