What's actually worth your time in Positano
Positano is a vertical village and the village is the sight: the majolica dome of Santa Maria Assunta seen from Spiaggia Grande, and the lanes of Via Cristoforo Colombo dropping toward it. The Path of the Gods from Bomerano ends in seventeen hundred steps down through Nocelle. Li Galli, the islets Nureyev once owned, are a boat detour. Fornillo, round the headland, is the quieter beach.
Positano after dark
There is no club scene and no pretence of one. The night is dinner on a terrace, then a drink at Music on the Rocks, the one real venue, cut into the cliff at the eastern end of Spiaggia Grande. Franco's Bar and Le Sirenuse's terrace handle the aperitivo hour at prices matching the view. By midnight in September the lanes are quiet and the SITA buses have finished.
What things cost in Positano
A front-row sunbed and umbrella set at Spiaggia Grande runs sixty euros and upward for two, while back rows sit nearer 25 to 30 each and a small free strip survives in the middle. The ferry to Amalfi is about ten euros one way and Capri more. The Nocelle bus costs 1.75. Garage parking is billed by the hour and hurts within a morning.
Positano's museums, and which one to pick
The single museum is remarkable and recent. MAR Positano, opened beneath Santa Maria Assunta, is a Roman villa buried by the eruption of 79 AD, its triclinium walls carrying fourth-style frescoes with a pegasus and sea creatures, and you reach it through the crypt with its stone drying seats for the dead. It runs nine to nine from April through October and ten to four in winter.
What to eat in Positano
Amalfi cooking means lemons the size of fists: delizia al limone, a dome of sponge filled with lemon cream, and scialatielli, a short fat egg pasta usually dressed ai frutti di mare. Take a granita from the stand by the beach steps instead of a seated coffee at three times the price. Sfusato lemons off the terraces go into limoncello, which every shop sells and almost nobody distils.
