The lake is the attraction, and ZVV zone tickets are accepted on the short Zurichsee and Limmat boat runs, so a transit pass doubles as a cruise. Bahnhofstrasse is window shopping rather than sightseeing. The Grossmunster tower climb and Chagall's windows in the Fraumunster both charge and both deliver. Uetliberg, twenty minutes out on the S10, gives the view people expect the city to have.
Zurich after dark
Zurich-West, the old industrial Kreis 5 around Escher-Wyss and the Viadukt arches, holds the clubs, with Frau Gerolds Garten as the outdoor one. Langstrasse in Kreis 4 is the rougher, later strip. What to eat in Zurich
Zurcher Geschnetzeltes, veal in cream and white wine with rosti, is the dish that carries the city's name, and Zeughauskeller serves it inside a converted arsenal. Sausage matters here: the grilled Kalbsbratwurst from Sternen Grill at Bellevue is a standing institution. The Niederdorf lanes hide small kitchens behind the tourist frontage. Fondue is a winter order and locals will say so.
