Things to do in Cape Town worth pre-booking
Cape Town’s best days are outdoors and mostly cheap, but three things genuinely need booking ahead — the Robben Island ferry, the Table Mountain cableway on a clear day, and any full-day peninsula or Winelands trip if you are not driving yourself. Cape Peninsula full-day tour (Chapman’s Peak, Cape Point, Boulders)
The single best day in Cape Town, and the one no bus can do for you: Hout Bay, the Chapman’s Peak toll road, the Cape of Good Hope reserve at the peninsula’s tip, and the African penguin colony at Boulders Beach on the way back up the False Bay side.
Roughly 9–10 hours whether guided or self-driven. Chapman’s Peak closes in high wind and after rockfalls — every operator has an inland detour, so confirm what happens if it shuts.
Robben Island Museum ferry & prison tour
The UNESCO-listed island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, reached by ferry from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront. The museum’s general tour runs about 3.5 hours including the crossing, and prison sections are led by former political prisoners.
The museum currently prices the general tour at R400 for South African adults and R600 for non-South Africans (children R210 / R310). Book direct on the museum’s own site — departures are limited and rough seas cancel sailings outright.
Table Mountain: cableway, Lion’s Head or Platteklip Gorge
The cableway lifts you to the plateau in five minutes and the rotating car gives you the full circle on the way up. Lion’s Head is the classic sunrise-or-sunset walk; Platteklip Gorge is the direct, steep, unshaded way to the top on foot.
The cableway closes in high wind or cloud and publishes live status on its own homepage each morning — treat it as a weather-window activity, never a fixed appointment.
Winelands day: Stellenbosch, Franschhoek & Constantia
Constantia’s estates sit 25 minutes from the City Bowl and can be a half day. Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are 45–75 minutes out and deserve a full one — the Franschhoek wine tram is the standard no-driver solution.
South Africa enforces drink-driving hard. If you are tasting, take a tour or a driver — this is the one day where the guided option is the practical option.
Township and District Six history tours
The District Six Museum in the City Bowl tells the forced-removals story in the neighbourhood it happened to; guided visits to Langa, Khayelitsha and Bo-Kaap add the living context. Choose operators run by people from the communities they show you.
Read the operator description carefully and pick a walking or small-group format over a drive-past. The difference in experience is enormous.
Ocean days: kelp-forest snorkelling, kayaking & whale watching
Cape Town sits between two currents: cold, clear Atlantic kelp forest on the west side, warmer False Bay on the east. Southern right whales move along the coast roughly June–November, with Hermanus about two hours away as the classic shore-watching base.
Atlantic water sits in the low teens Celsius year-round — any decent operator supplies a proper wetsuit, and you want one.

Booking tips (so you don’t lose a day)
- Do not book the cableway or a Robben Island sailing for your last morning. Both cancel for weather, and if you have no spare day you simply lose them.
- Build your three days around the mountain rather than the calendar: check the cableway’s live status the night before and swap your clear day onto it.
- Book Robben Island directly through the museum rather than a reseller — departures are limited and resold tickets rarely help when a sailing is cancelled.
- For the peninsula and the Winelands, compare a guided day against a one-day car hire plus fuel. With three or four people the car usually wins; solo or if you are tasting wine, the tour does.
- Restaurants in Cape Town book out — reserve dinner in Sea Point, the City Bowl and Camps Bay several days ahead in summer, not on the day.
